Health
Upon entering Egypt, travelers
over one year of age will need
a yellow fever vaccination certificate
(if they are coming from infected
areas).
Vaccination against typhoid
and polio is advised.
Precautions against hepatitis
A and E and diphtheria are advised
as well as immunization against
hepatitis B in some cases.
Try to stay away from raw vegetables
and fruit that may not have
been washed properly as the
change in water and diet can
easily make your stomach uneasy
and thus give you a case of
diarrhea and nausea. Also try
to drink as much liquids as
possible to avoid dehydration
in summer.
Always boil milk before you
drink it as it may not have
been pasteurized outside major
cities.
Vegetables should always be
washed and fruit peeled before
eating.
Wading in slow or stagnant water
could cause Schistosomiasis
on occasion. Symptoms include
inflammation, cough, fever and
skin eruptions. This disease
is curable, however it is not
advised to swim or wade in the
Nile where water is still.
All major hospitals offer medical
services and attention 24/7.
Hospitals are abundant all over
the country, however they accept
cash only and only some take
credit cards. Pharmacies are
usually open from 10 am to 10
pm every day, and some are open
24 hours/day. Local and imported
medicine can be found here and
is considered relatively inexpensive.
Try to avoid direct exposure
to the sun during hot summer
months, otherwise use some form
of protection or a sun-block
with a high SPF factor
